The Southwest has some of the most incredible hiking trails in the U.S. However, the trails have proven to be relentless and unforgiving, even during the cooler months and for avid hikers. So, if you choose to set off on an outdoor adventure, here are some things to keep in mind before heading out.
BRING PLENTY OF WATER
Water is one of the most important things to remember when hiking in the desert. Dehydration can happen very quickly, even after October when the temperatures start to drop. So, it's a good idea to carry a backpack with plenty of H2O to keep yourself hydrated and your hands free.
PROTECT YOURSELF FROM THE SUN
The ideal time for hiking is when the sun is less intense, such as early morning or late evening. Protect yourself by applying plenty of sunscreen before starting your hike. Additionally, wear sunglasses and a hat for added protection, especially if there's no shade available.

STAY ON THE PATH
Always remain on the designated trails to avoid getting lost. The desert landscape can look very similar, which can make it confusing and difficult to navigate, especially if you're unfamiliar with your surroundings. It's important to stay on the safest path and to always avoid restricted areas.
